Macy’s is saying bye-bye to the Donald, too.
Following Trump’s derogatory remarks about Mexican immigrants during his presidential announcement, which prompted him to be dropped by NBC, the home of his Celebrity Apprentice show, and Univision, which broadcasts the Trump-owned Miss USA Pageant, the department store will now phase out its menswear line from the real-estate developer.
The move comes after over 700,000 people signed aMoveOn.org petition calling for Macy's M -0.4% CEO Terry Lundgren to end the department store’s business relationship with Trump.
And it signals a social climate in which the public no longer tolerates openly bigoted figures branding everything from the clothing they wear to the cookware they prepare meals with. In turn, businesses must follow suit, or risk alienating their shopping base.
In 2013, celebrity chef Paula Deen’s racist remarks prompted the near-overnight decimation of her culinary empire from a Food Network ouster to Wal-Mart dropping her eponymous product lines.
Macy’s has carried Trump’s menswear collection since 2004 and has featured him prominently in T.V. spots as one if its exclusive, celebrity brands, along with names like Martha Stewart and Sean “Diddy” Combs.
Trump claims that he’s the one who cut ties with Macy’s.
“I have decided to terminate my relationship with Macy’s because of the pressure being put on them by outside sources,” he said in a statement to FOX411.
