Manny Pacquiao (56-5-2) squares off against Chris Algieri (20-0) in the ring on Saturday night in Macau, China with the telecast starting at 9 pm on HBO PPV (the fight will be Sunday morning local time). It is Pacquiao’s second straight year fighting at the Cotai Arena in the Venetian Macao casino in the gambling mecca of Macau where he defeated Brandon Rios last November.
Algieri burst onto the boxing scene with his upset of Ruslan Provodnikov in June. Algieri recovered from two early fight knockdowns in the fight to win a split decision. Algieri’s background gets a lot of attention with him holding a Masters degree in clinical nutrition, and the promoters are pushing him as a modern day Rocky Balboa with New York roots. Saturday is Algieri’s first bout where he has not been working a second job heading into fight night, and his purse will be 17 times more than his previous biggest payday.
Manny Pacquiao looks to stay on top against Chris Algieri.
But the star of Saturday’s fight is Pacquiao, who long ago cemented his place as one of the greatest fighters of his generation and an icon in the Philippines where he is a two-term congressman. Pacquiao has bounced back from two defeats in 2012 to post two impressive wins over the last 12 months. With Pacquiao’s resurgence, promoter Bob Arum is once again making noise about a possible blockbuster fight between Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather. Most have dismissed the talk as Arum trying to create interest in Pacquiao-Algieri, which is a tough sell on pay-per-view beyond the hard core boxing crowd.
Here are some of the numbers that define Pacquiao’s career and Saturday’s fight.
3.5: Algieri’s height advantage in inches compared to Pacquiao. He’ll have a 5″ reach advantage.
