According to a new survey from PBS Kids, “more than half of parents plan holiday tech purchases.”
In November 2013, PBS Kids surveyed 1000 US parents with kids between ages 2 and 10.
54% of parents “plan to purchase or give a tech item to their children this holiday season.”
The number is even higher among young parents, ages 18-34, “nearly 6 in 10” or 59% say “they’ll make a technology purchase.”
Despite all the hype around the release of both the PS4 and the XBox One, tablets and smartphones are narrowly more popular than video game consoles among parents planning to buy tech.
28% of parents plan to purchase a tablet, 8% a smartphone.
18% plan to purchase a video game console, 14% a hand-held video game player.
Of course, the survey predates the media onslaught that accompanied the release of Microsoft MSFT +1.41%and Sony ’s next generation consoles. I’d be curious to know if the number would be the same if the survey were conducted today. Would tablets still take the top slot? If so, why? Is there something about apps? The rest of the PBS Kids survey looks at the way parents choose apps.
“Nearly 7 in 10 parents say they currently purchase or plan to purchase apps for their children.” But parents don’t just plan to hand their kids tablets and let them loose with an expense account. 60% of parents say they will choose the games and apps together with the child, and it makes no difference whether it is a first or second child. 33% of parents choose the apps themselves. And only 7% of kids choose their own apps.
What factors do parents consider when choosing apps? Educational content is the “top priority” when it comes to criteria for choosing apps. 77% of parents cite “educational content as an important factor,” beating out price (56%), familiar characters (45%), lack of advertising (34%), multiple games/levels (34%), trustworthiness of brand (27%).
It is hardly surprising that educational content is a top priority, “nearly all parents (99%), are in agreement that educational apps will play a role in early childhood learning in the future.”
If you’re among the parents choosing a tablet, I offer you the following slideshow of my favorite educational apps.
