Leadership Lessons From Lebron James - 2013 Version

LeBron JamesLast year at this time, when the Miami Heat defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder I did a post, Leadership Lessons from Lebron James (below).  This year the circumstances were very different but the drama, due to the extreme competitiveness of the series, was even greater.   Lebron is arguably the most scrutinized athlete on the planet.  How he once again handled the glare of an impossibly bright spotlight is worthy of note.  Accordingly, Leadership Lessons from Lebron James – 2013 Version:
Don’t be paralyzed by the opinions of others – The burden of expectations on Lebron is immense (and has been since about seventh grade), as are the number of people always hoping for failure.  Performing at a relentlessly high level under this continual grinding level of pressure requires enormous mental toughness, focus… and psychological blinders.
Never give up, especially when circumstances most suggest you should – In the fourth quarter of what was instantly a classic Game 6, and the San Antonio Spurs held a seemingly insurmountable lead, Lebron played his best and most inspirational basketball of the playoffs.  He almost singlehandedly willed the Heat to victory when it would have been easy and natural to give in to discouragement.
It takes a village – In team sports or business, nothing great is accomplished without relying on others.  Though Lebron occasionally took over games individually when he absolutely had to, his first impulse was always to involve his teammates, making sure Dwayne Wade, Chris Bosh, Ray Allen, Shane Battier, Mike Miller, etc. were completely involved in the action.  The San Antonio Spurs could not have been a more worthy opponent, tough as old Texas boots, and Lebron alone could never have won without a total team effort.
Oh, and one other thing: It doesn’t hurt when you’re 6’8″, 250 pounds, have zero body fat and the seeming cardiovascular capacity of Secretariat.
