McDonalds Slaps Every Other Fast Food Restaurant Across the Face

English: McDonalds' sign in Harlem. Those are my son’s words, not mine. We wanted to grab something quick and be on the road. Josh said we shoulddefinitely go to McDonalds. We saw a Subway (takes too long but healthy food.) Burger King (no healthy food.) We missed breakfast by 25 minutes so we each got a McWrap.
“Why McDonalds?” I asked Josh. He was adamant we go there.
“They have things figured out. They are more healthy, fresh, at least for fast food. And now they are the fastest again. They know how to change… and quickly. Their marketing folks know what America wants and they deliver.”
“My friends and I used to mock McDonalds,” my son Josh laughed. “They forgot who they were. They were the Kmart of fast food. But then they reinvented themselves. Killer strategy. They remodeled every store; all modern and clean. You walk into a Burger King and you feel you are still in the ‘90’s. The McDonalds in American Fork, Utah, they tore it down and had a complete makeover with everything cool and modern. Then a little while later they came out with the healthy stuff. Risky. That’s tough to do in a down economy, but it’s paying off big time.”
As a side note, I’ve noticed the new, modern, clean approach is also the key ingredient to which movie theaters everyone wants to go to. – Ken
“And the double lanes are ingenius, you get your food faster than anyone else.” Josh goes on. “Wendy’s is the only one that can keep up on ‘health’ and ‘fast’. But McDonalds has the lead, no question.”
As we pull up and order, the girl on the McDonalds intercom is fun and friendly, with personality, but not over the top. She is a lot like the Southwest stewardess on my flight last night. That never happens with fast food. (The worst example of fast food is when you have some pre-recorded voice like a radio announcer come on at the drive-up and announce the special of the day, followed up by a wisp of a voice you can barely hear.)
“She actually had the entire plane push their stewardess call light button and sing happy birthday to a six year old girl on the flight, who mentioned it was her birthday. The stewardess said this was the candles on her birthday cake, and the whole plane sang… amazing!”
Josh exclaimed as I read this part out loud, and said, “That is awesome! Southwest really did that?”
The McDonalds girl laughed as she fumble-fingered our order when we asked for two waters, “Other than the 22 waters I just rang you up for, is that all today?” She immediately corrected our order back to 2 waters.. she was real. She asked us to pull ahead to wait for our order, and almost immediately she brought it out and asked, “Where are you off to?”
“Utah,” my son Josh replied.
“Have a safe trip!” she said and was gone.

The lettuce on the wrap is cold and fresh, the sweet chili sauce is awesome. We both unwrap our grilled chicken.. it is really good. Both Josh and I comment on the neat effect in our mouth with the cool fresh lettuce against the warm grilled chicken.
Details, details.
They matter.
Great job McDonalds!
